Insects
Skopelos island, North Sporades, Greece

In Skopelos, like in all Mediterranean places exist ants, spiders, mosquitoes, midges, beetles, horseflies, hornets, bees and - the biggest nuisance - wasps.

Prevention is easy with the highly effective range of insect repellent sprays, creams, roll-ons and gels available, although some are not suitable for children under 6 years, so look for products specially designed for them.

We recommend "Repel Plus" a wasp repellent spray by Boots, which effectively repels wasps, bees, hornets and horseflies. Ideal for summer usage and barbecues.

How to avoid being bitten
  • Wear long sleeved tops and trousers after dark, especially at dusk when mosquitoes are most active.

  • If you are sitting outside, use a citronella candle to ward off insects.
  • Use an insect repellent on all exposed areas.
  • Reapply insect repellent regularly.
  • If you leave the windows open at night, draw the curtains.

What to do if you’re bitten or stung

  • If the sting is embedded, remove it quickly.
  • Don’t squeeze or scratch. Use a sting relief product to relieve irritation.

  • Hydrocortisone cream (for bites only) or antihistamine tablets also provide relief and reduce inflammation.
  • Difficulty with breathing, wheezing or nausea may mean a severe allergic reaction which needs immediate medical attention.
