Coastal Greek waters have been well utilised for centuries by professional fishermen. In the past few years, there has been a dramatic rise in the number of recreational fishermen and tourists which has resulted in an increased interest in marine life. The recent world-wide concern for environmental issues has also greatly contributed to the increased attention given to the marine environment of Greece. As a result there is a need for literature which provides information about marine ecosystems and organisms in Greek waters.
