Skopelos Costumes
Skopelos island, North Sporades, Greece

How sad to see the sumptuous and sometimes exquisite traditional costumes relegated to chests that reek of moth balls. Who dares draw inspiration from them to create clothes for today, more practical and lighter, but faithful to the same spirit?

Unfortunately, today's brides dress like something out of Dallas, decked out in synthetic lace - women whose grandmothers were adorned like queens. It is only when their grandchildren return to the village, having learned to reject nouveau-riche values, that they sometimes come to prize the group's traditional culture once again. - Marc Held
